Major Categories of Tattoo Designs and Their Meanings

While there are no strict pre-defined meanings for each tattoo, some of the more popular tattoo designs have come to have a certain connotation with them.  If you are considering choosing one of the following tattoo design types, consider not only what the tattoo design will mean to you, but what it might possibly mean to those who view it as well.  Then make your own decision on whether that is truly the right design for you.  Remember, tattoo art is a very personal choice and you need to be comfortable with the design that you select for your body.

Crosses:  Whether Christian, Celtic, or otherwise, a cross usually denotes a religious meaning to those who see it.  Before choosing a cross tattoo, consider what it means to you and if it reflects your spirituality.

Tribal Art:  One of the more popular designs today, tribal art tattoos can take many forms and the actual meaning can vary depending on the image selected.  However, overall, choosing tribal art tends to signify a connection to a culture and a past.

Wings:  Another popular design for tattoos is wings (either angel, butterfly, bird, or fairy).  Wings tend to symbolize a sense of freedom and light-heartedness.  Specifically, angel wings are also used to signify a departed loved one.

Stars:  Star designs can have several different meanings, depending on the art style and coloring given to the star itself.  Stars are often used in connection with one of the following meanings:  military connotation, guiding North Star, shooting star, being a dreamer, or having a special sparkle.
