What to Expect When Getting a Tattoo
If you are about to get your first tattoo, it often calms your fears if you first know what is going to happen at the tattoo parlor. Here is a step by step walk-through of what typically happens when you get a tattoo. While the steps might vary a little between different tattoo parlors, if anything is significantly different, make sure to get a second opinion before having your tattoo done. Also, most tattoo artists are more than happy to talk through what to expect with you prior to actually doing the tattoo.
Step 1: Get the paperwork done. While the laws vary from state to state, most states have a minimum age of 18 or 21 for receiving a tattoo. The tattoo artist will verify your age (often using a driver’s license) and will collect payment prior to applying the tattoo.
Step 2: Clean the area. In order for the tattoo to be applied properly, the area of your skin needs to be clean and hair-free. Some tattoo artists will shave the area as well as disinfecting it.
Step 3: Apply a template to the skin. Unless your artist prefers to work freehand, they will apply a temporary template to your skin that they can use as a guideline of where to place the tattoo lines.
Step 4: Apply the tattoo. Often, the artist will apply the lines first and then fill in the color and shading second.
Step 5: Provide directions for caring for your tattoo. Don’t leave the office without receiving written directions for how to clean and care for your new tattoo.
